The change marks the end of the Lumia line, with only Windows devices from HP, Alcatel and Acer available. It’s worth noting, however, that this has been expected. In its Q3 earnings call, the Redmond giant announced plans to discontinue production by the end of June, and that date has come and gone. In the most recent report, Microsoft announced its revenue from phones as ‘immaterial’, so it’s quite clear the company is trying to distance itself. Verizon was the only other US carrier to offer the 735 online, and its web page reads ‘coming soon’. You should still be able to get it from physical stores, but it doesn’t even support the latest Windows update.
The New Nokia
For fans of Nokia, but not necessarily the Windows platform, there’s still some hope. HMD global is set to launch the Nokia 8, a powerful Android flagship a Snapdragon 835 processor and 4 GB of RAM. The phone is designed to compete with the likes of Apple and Samsung, coming in at a price point of $705. For that, you’ll get a rich 5.3″ 2560×1440 LCD display, 64 GB of storage, and a 13-megapixel Zeiss camera. Whatever the case, it’s sad to see Microsoft’s first-party phones go. The only hope now is the much-rumored Surface Phone, of which we remain skeptical.
